Shopify or a Custom Website: Which One Should You Actually Build?
June 18, 2026 · 5 min read
This question comes up on almost every discovery call, and it gets decided badly more often than not, usually because someone picked a platform before deciding what they were actually selling. The right answer has nothing to do with which platform sounds more modern.
Build on Shopify if...
- You are selling physical products people add to a cart and pay for online
- Your catalogue changes often, new products, new variants, restocks
- You need payments, shipping rules and inventory to work out of the box
- Speed to launch matters more than a fully bespoke layout
Shopify has already solved checkout, tax, shipping and payment gateways, problems that take months to get right from scratch. We build on a proven theme from the Shopify marketplace and customise it around your brand and products, which gets you a store that works on day one instead of a custom checkout that needs a year of edge cases ironed out.
Build a custom website if...
- You sell a service, not a product, consulting, real estate, clinics, agencies
- The goal is enquiries and calls, not an online cart
- Your brand and story are the differentiator, not a catalogue
- You need a layout that does not look like every other store in your category
A custom build means every section is designed around your specific offer instead of fitted into a template's blocks. For a service business, that usually converts better than a generic theme, because the whole page can be built around one clear next step: book a call, request a quote, start an enquiry.
The hybrid case
Some businesses sell a service and one flagship product, a clinic with a skincare line, a studio with merchandise. In that case we usually build the main site custom and either link out to a lean Shopify store for the product, or embed Shopify's buy button inside the custom site. You get the brand story where it matters and proper commerce infrastructure where you need it, without forcing one platform to do a job it was not built for.
What we do not do
We do not build on WordPress, Webflow or any other third-party CMS, and we do not sell "fully custom" Shopify themes built from scratch, most stores do not need that expense. What you get is either code we write and hand over in full, or a proven Shopify theme set up and customised around your products, whichever actually fits what you sell.
